![]() ![]() Old hostilities don't die easily, of course, but after the death of Galvatron and witnessing the incredible spectacle of Optimus Prime raising a Titan, the majority of Autobots and Decepticons now seem willing to give peace a chance. In this we see Autobots and Decepticons working together and fraternizing in a way that we have rarely seen before, overcoming hostility and suspicion on both sides. That is why the concurrent Earth plotline is the perfect counterpoint, offering a glimmer of hope. The situation is equally hard for some Decepticons, with loyalists like Soundwave feeling utterly let down by their leader's actions. But equally, after millions of years fighting against what Megatron and his forces stood for it is no surprise that some Autobots can't accept this sudden change of heart. If Megatron himself is not beyond redemption then it perhaps prove that no-one is a lost cause. The very concept is one that challenges the idea that characters have to be put into one box or another. There are no easy answers, and the characters grapple with the questions along with the reader. RELATED: New Autobot Action Figure Features a Pro-Trump Message Could such a person ever be redeemed? Should he even be allowed to try? This was the same character who, in the All Hail Megatron maxiseries, published only five years earlier, had wiped out entire human cities without the slightest hint of remorse, glorying in the destruction caused by his Decepticons. ![]() But this was also the same character who had committed the most severe acts of villainy over the years. And, most intriguingly of all, we see Megatron renounce violence and don the Autobot symbol of the deceased Bumblebee. We see tentative attempts at cooperation and perhaps even friendship between some Autobots and Decepticons. We see it in Optimus Prime's attempt to lay down the burden of leadership and become Orion Pax once more. We see this in Starscream trying to gain the population's trust after a lifetime of betrayal and doubledealing. A recurring theme is not only whether characters want to change and are capable of it, but whether society will allow them to move beyond their familiar roles. Prime's self-exile foreshadowed the larger themes that took center stage when James Roberts and John Barber took the reigns of the ongoing titles. So great was their unrest that Optimus Prime voluntarily left Cybertron, knowing he would always be viewed by some as the living embodiment of a tremendously divisive conflict. They returned to a Cybertron that had been devastated by millennia of war, and held both Autobot and Decepticon equally culpable. After Cyberton was saved from the threat of D-Void, thousands of non-combatants returned to their homeworld for the first time in millions of years, and for this disparate mix of Cybertronians the 'good guys' in the conflict weren't entirely clear. The divide between Autobot and Decepticon was further blurred by the arrival of NAILs, or Non-Affiliated Indigenous Life-forms. ![]()
